Sooooooo I gave that some thought.

Subban would be the best marketing an expansion could get.

But I feel the Devils need veteran leadership in the locker room, the 9mil comes off in another year. I feel the Devils are better with Subban than with a Butcher, for example.

Resigning McLeod now pretty much locks him into being protected.

Ron Francis is a smart guy. Don't think he will.

We have 36M in cap space and are 13M under the cap floor with Subbans 9M hit, and this is his final year. Why the (frank) would we give up assets to get Seattle to take him, when hes not a cap dump? What a stupid thing to comment

It doesnt actually really change anything. He was likely going to be protected anyway

100%. Cap isn't an issue this year, even next year for the Devils.

The question is what they do in free agency this year or next.

Who do you use the last protect on". McLeod, Johnsson or Bastian? (assuming butcher isn't on your protected list)

Its either McLeod or Johnsson, Bastian isnt even in the discussion. I personally would protect Johnsson, but the team is probably going to protect McLeod.

Arguments can be made either way and i understand both sides

Agree. Bastian is a no protect.

The hardest part of the exercise for me was: McLeod or Johnsson?

Yup thats what it comes down to. That spot for the forwards, and Subban or Butcher on defense for the last spot unless we acquire one in the next like 40 hours before the trade freeze

I think any trades that happen before the freeze could look something like this:

3rd or 4th rounder for a player to be exposed such as a bait.

Seems like a lot of teams are willing to move forwards but not defensemen before the deadline.

Yeah seems that way. And the price seems insanely high for any D that is actually available. Doesnt seem like much is gonna happen before the expansion draft, so Dreger was right on that. Im sure it'll pick up a bit right before or during the entry draft

I could not care less who we protect on D. With Smith being ineligible, and Murray being unsigned, they can take whoever they want. I still hold out hope that the Dev's can make a deal that brings another D in prior to the Krakens draft. If we leave Seig and Butch both exposed, who cares. Like you said, it's a toss up. Many teams are getting hit far worse than us.

Anyone listen to 31 thoughts with Elliott Friedman? Supposedly, Fitz was shopping the 4th overall for a young, unnamed, top pairing D with current term on his contract. Vague, yes. But Friedman is pretty reliable in terms of trade rumors. Immediately my mind jumps to Philly and Proverov, or one of the many great D on Carolina in hopes of retaining Hamilton. Philly needs a big shake up, tho this is just a wild assumption.

I agree with that. I’m talking about the list in the article. News of the resign broke before the blog so he should be included.

Seems like Fitz is really only going to move in on a deal that is really good for the team. Yandle isn't good but eating his contract for two years for picks/prospects seems like it would have benefitted the team long term. Maybe Florida's pick at 26 just wasn't a valuable enough asset to make it worth it.

Well Yandle also had a full NMC, so i doubt he would've accepted a deal here. He most likely said he didnt want to go anywhere, so they had to buy him out

Might as well get paid by two teams.

I'm excited to see what team gives a mega contract to Landeskog since it looks like his extension in Colorado has fallen through.

Oh yeah, both him and Hyman contracts are going to be brutal after 4 years. Both will get 7 year deals in the open market. And it makes complete sense that both Edmonton and VAN are in on Hyman lol

Gritty winger coming off one good season playing on an excellent offensive team driving the play for him? That's got Vancouver written all over it.

With knee injuries/concerns on top of it! Definitely a Jim Benning signing
